On Friday I took a few some of my international students about figurative language. I introduced the unit by using a power point covering key terms, found a youtube video that had lots of examples of figurative language in popular music, then had my students read an essay loaded with figurative language and underline all the examples they found. To top it all off, we took a field trip to the Portland Museum of Art. The goal was for each of them to choose a work of art and write about it using some of the figurative language devices we learned about in class. Below are some of the paintings they will write about.
